STUMP GRINDING
Stump Grinding and Removal in New Orleans
We grind stumps below ground level and haul away the debris, so you can reclaim your yard.
At TurnKey Tree Cutting, we remove the stubborn stumps that turn a New Orleans yard into an eyesore. A leftover stump is more than an appearance problem. It can be a tripping hazard and attract unwanted pests.
Our efficient stump grinding restores your yard’s beauty and safety, grinding the stump below the surface so you can reclaim the space. Contact us today for a free estimate.
What Is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting wheel to chew the stump down in passes, turning wood into chips rather than pulling anything out of the ground. That is the important difference from full extraction, which digs the root ball out and leaves a crater.
Grinding is faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive to whatever is growing around it. For nearly every residential situation it is the right call.
Why Remove a Tree Stump
An old stump takes up usable space and can sprout new growth, sending up shoots you have to keep cutting back. Stumps also invite termites, ants, and other pests close to your home.
Grinding the stump below the surface solves all of this at once. You get back a clean, open area for planting, landscaping, or simply a tidy lawn.
A stump also quietly limits what you can do with the space. You cannot mow over it, plant through it, or lay anything on top of it, so it takes a piece of the yard out of use permanently.
In our climate the pest issue is the one that catches people out. Decaying wood sitting in damp ground close to a house is exactly what termites are looking for, and a stump near a foundation is a standing invitation.
OUR PROCESS
Our Stump Grinding Process
Assessment
We measure the stump at its widest point, check the root flare, and look at access for the grinder. We also ask what the space is for afterward, since planting a new tree needs a deeper grind than laying mulch.
Grinding
We take the stump below ground level in passes rather than trying to do it in one bite. Buried utilities, rocks, and old fence posts are common in established yards, so we work carefully rather than fast.
Cleanup
We remove the grindings and debris and leave the area clean and ready to use. If you would rather keep the chips as mulch, we can backfill with them instead.
WHAT DRIVES THE PRICE
What Affects the Cost of Stump Grinding
Stumps are priced on what the machine has to chew through, not on the tree that used to stand there.
Diameter at the Widest Point
Stumps are priced on width far more than height, measured across the flare rather than the cut face.
How Many in One Visit
Several stumps on the same trip cost less each than the same stumps booked separately.
Depth Required
A deeper grind for sod or replanting takes longer than a standard grind for mulch.
Root Flare Spread
Large surface roots radiating out from the base are extra material to remove.
Access for the Grinder
The machine needs a route in. A stump behind a narrow gate limits which grinder we can bring.
Soil and Buried Debris
Rocky or gravelly soil dulls teeth and slows the work, and old fence posts turn up more often than you would think.
AFTER THE GRIND
What Happens to the Hole and the Wood Chips
Grinding leaves a mound of chips and a shallow depression. You have two reasonable choices, and the right one depends on what the space is for.
Backfill With the Grindings
They settle over the following months, so expect to top up once. Perfectly fine under mulch or in a bed, and it costs nothing extra.
Haul Them Away
We take the chips off site and top the hole with clean soil. This is what you want before laying sod or planting anything.
One Thing Worth Knowing
Wood chips break down slowly and draw nitrogen from the soil while they do it. They make a fine surface mulch and a poor growing medium, so do not plant directly into them.
BEFORE WE START
What We Check Before the Grinder Runs
A grinder does not know what is under the stump. These are the checks that keep a routine job from becoming an expensive one.
Buried Utilities
Gas, water, power, and communication lines run shallower than people expect in older neighborhoods. Locating them before the wheel turns is not optional.
Irrigation and Drainage
Sprinkler lines and French drains sit in exactly the zone a grinder works through. Knowing where they run decides how we approach the flare.
Hardscape and Foundations
Stumps beside a slab, walkway, or retaining wall need a shallower, more controlled pass so nothing gets undermined.
Access Route and Ground Condition
The grinder has to get in and back out. Soft ground after heavy rain can mean waiting a day rather than leaving ruts across your lawn.
SITUATIONS WE HANDLE
Common Stump Jobs Around New Orleans
Most of what we grind falls into one of a few patterns, and each one changes the approach.
The Leftover From a Removal
A fresh stump from a recent tree removal. The wood is still hard, the flare is intact, and access is usually already clear.
The One That Has Been There Years
Partly rotted, often hollow, sometimes hosting pests. Softer to cut but full of surprises, and frequently sprouting shoots that keep coming back.
Several at Once After Clearing
Multiple stumps left from a lot clearing. Handled in one visit, which is both faster and cheaper per stump than booking them separately.
The Tight Courtyard Stump
Behind a narrow gate or hemmed in by a wall. This is where the machine we can physically fit through decides the whole job.
